BCustomer input — what we ask the user

B.1The conversation shape

The shortest interview in the suite — 2–4 minutes. Direct, no-frills. The IOU is a fundamentally different shape from the Personal Loan Agreement: the default is single-signature (only the debtor signs, acknowledging the debt). A bilateral variant is offered for users who want both signatures.

ECompliance guardrails

E.1Why 🟢

Same regulatory shape as Personal Loan Agreement — private one-off debt acknowledgments between individuals, outside the regulated consumer-credit regime. The IOU is centuries-old; we're providing a template.

Acknowledgment of debt

IOU

I, Jamie Daniel Patel of 14 Northwood Avenue, Leeds LS6 4PJ, acknowledge that I owe Samuel Robertson of 9 Beckett Park Mews, Leeds LS6 3QQ the sum of £750.00 (seven hundred and fifty pounds).

The money was paid by Sam on 12 May 2026 to secure two tickets for the Latitude Festival 2026 weekend pass, which I have received the benefit of.

I agree to repay this sum by 1 August 2026 by bank transfer to Sam's account at NatWest. If for any reason I cannot pay by that date, I will tell Sam in writing at least 7 days beforehand and we will agree a new date.

How this works. This is an IOU — a written acknowledgment of a debt, signed by the debtor. Sam keeps the signed copy as evidence. If Jamie doesn't pay by 1 August, Sam can ask him to pay; if Jamie still doesn't pay, Sam can pursue the £750 through the Small Claims Court. The IOU is the written record that the debt exists.
